Eye Flu Treatment at Home – What to Do When Your Eye Feels Like Burning

Okay so first off – eye flu is NOT fun. It’s itchy, it’s red, it makes you look like you cried for 3 hours (even tho u didn’t) and worst of all – it’s super contagious. Like one person gets it and boom, next day half the family’s rubbing their eyes too.

But don’t panic if you or someone in your house got it. Most of the time, eye flu (also called conjunctivitis or pink eye) goes away on its own in a few days. But ya gotta take care and do stuff at home so it doesn’t spread or get worse.

So here’s a bunch of home remedies and tips that actually help when you got eye flu. Not doctor-level stuff, but like, things your mom or dadi maa or neighbor aunty told you that somehow work

First of all, what is eye flu?

Eye flu = inflammation of the thin layer that covers your eye and inner eyelid (called conjunctiva, hence “conjunctivitis” ). It can be from virus, bacteria, allergy, dust, pollution – basically anything annoying.

Common symptoms:

  • Redness

  • Itching

  • Watery eyes

  • Swollen eyelids

  • Eye sticking shut in morning (ew)

  • Light sensitivity

  • Discharge (sometimes white/yellow, sometimes watery)

If you’re getting these, specially in one eye first, then second eye later – yup, probably eye flu.

Now the main part – eye flu treatment at home

1. Don’t touch your eyes!!

Easier said than done but SERIOUSLY. Every time you rub or touch your infected eye, it can spread to the other eye, or to someone else. Use tissue or clean cotton if you have to wipe it, then throw it away. Don’t reuse cloths.

Also: wash hands 1000 times a day. Soap is your bestie now.

2. Cold compress (or warm, depending)

So if your eyes are itchy, red and burning – cold compress helps a lot. Just soak clean cotton or cloth in chilled water and place it on closed eye for a few mins. Do it a few times a day.

If your eye has a lot of pus or discharge (like in bacterial cases), sometimes warm compress works better. Helps loosen the sticky stuff. But don’t use same cloth for both eyes and don’t share with others!

3. Use rose water – but REAL one

Some people swear by rose water for soothing eyes. Just put a few drops on cotton and place on eyes, or chill it and do compress like above. But careful – don’t buy fake perfume-y rose water from market, that’ll just irritate your eye more.

Also: don’t put anything INSIDE your eye unless doc says it’s ok.

4. Breast milk (yes really )

Okay this one sounds weird but in many Indian homes, people use mother’s breast milk (if there’s a baby in the house) as eye drops for babies with eye flu. Apparently it has natural antibodies. There’s some science behind it too. But yeah, only try if it’s clean and fresh and u know what ur doing.

Probably don’t do this for adults though lol.

5. Tulsi water rinse

Soak tulsi (holy basil) leaves in clean boiled water, let it cool, then use that water as eye rinse or cold compress. Tulsi has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, so it can help soothe infection.

But again – strain it well, no bits in your eye pls

6. Stay home (don’t be the spreader)

If you got eye flu, PLEASE stay home for a few days. Don’t go to school, office, metro, weddings, etc. It spreads so fast, even just touching a door or shaking hands.

Better to take 2 days rest now than give it to 10 more people.

7. No kajal, no makeup, no contact lenses

Keep your eyes bare. No eye makeup, kajal, liner, nothing. It’ll irritate more and also contaminate your makeup stuff – then next time u use it, boom infection again. Throw away old eye makeup if you used it during infection.

Contact lenses – just no. Wear glasses and look nerdy for a few days

8. Use antibiotic drops ONLY if doctor says

A lot of people panic and start using random eye drops from chemist. Don’t do that. Some are for viral, some for bacterial, some have steroids – using wrong one can make it worse.

If it’s mild, usually no drops needed. Just rest + hygiene. But if it’s getting worse, vision blur, or lots of discharge – go to doctor and get proper drops.

What to eat (and not)

No spicy oily food – some ppl say it “heats up” the body more. Stick to simple food, drink lots of water, eat fruits with vit C like oranges. Helps immune system fight off virus faster.

How long does it last?

  • Viral eye flu – usually 4-7 days

  • Bacterial – 7-10 days with meds

  • Allergic – comes and goes

Most of the time, eye flu just goes away if you take care and don’t spread it.

How to not spread it

  • Don’t share towels, pillows, bedsheets

  • Wash bedsheets + pillowcases every 2-3 days

  • Keep separate hand towel (or just use tissue and throw)

  • Avoid hugging / close contact

  • Wash your hands a LOT

  • Don’t touch anything in public with infected hand

  • Wear sunglasses if you go outside (blocks dust + avoids stares lol)

When to see doctor ASAP

  • If eye pain becomes too much

  • Blurry vision

  • Light hurts your eye badly

  • Eye swelling too much

  • Infection not gone in 1 week

  • You’re a contact lens user (higher risk)

  • Baby or small kid has eye flu (don’t wait, show doc)

Final thoughts (eye flu sucks but it’s not the end)

Getting eye flu is annoying but not the worst thing ever. Just gotta be a lil careful, stay clean, rest your eyes (aka no 7 hours on Insta plz), and give it a few days to heal.

Most home remedies for eye flu are simple, old-school, and actually work if you do them properly. But don’t go putting random stuff in your eyes just coz someone on FB said so. If not improving in few days, just go to eye doc and get checked.

Take care of your eyes. You only got two.
