Okay so let’s talk about jaundice. It’s that illness people usually associate with yellow eyes and “don’t eat oily food” kind of advice. But it’s not just about eyes or skipping fried stuff for few days. It’s an actual condition that’s linked to your liver — and sometimes it can be serious if ignored.
Now, not everyone understands what jaundice really is, and many people get confused between typhoid, hepatitis and jaundice (same happened in my family once lol). So in this article I’ll explain symptoms of jaundice in simple words, not medical textbook style.
What is Jaundice?
First, let’s understand what jaundice is. Basically it’s a liver-related condition where the level of a yellow pigment called bilirubin increases in the body.
Bilirubin is made when your body breaks down old red blood cells. Usually the liver processes it and flushes it out. But if your liver is not working properly (maybe inflamed or infected), bilirubin builds up and makes your skin and eyes turn yellow. That’s jaundice.
It’s not a disease by itself, it’s actually a symptom of another underlying problem, like hepatitis, gallbladder stone, or liver infection.
Main Symptoms of Jaundice
Alright let’s get into the signs you might notice if someone has jaundice. Some of these are obvious, and some are more sneaky.
1. Yellowing of Eyes and Skin
This is the most common and classic sign. The whites of the eyes (called sclera) turn yellow first. Then slowly, skin can also start looking yellowish or pale.
In some people it’s mild, in others it’s really dark yellow, depends on how bad the jaundice is.
Pro tip: Best way to notice yellowing is in natural light, especially in the eyes.
2. Dark Yellow or Brown Urine
Pee becomes very dark – like strong tea or cola colored. Even if you’re drinking water, urine stays dark, which is a red flag.
This is coz the extra bilirubin is coming out through urine.
3. Fatigue and Weakness
People with jaundice feel super tired, even after rest. Energy is like 0%. Just climbing stairs or walking around house feels like running marathon.
And even after sleeping a full night, still tired in morning. That’s coz liver is not filtering toxins properly.
4. Pale or Clay-Colored Stools
Yup, even your poop changes. Instead of normal brown, stools become light grey or pale, coz bile isn’t reaching intestine properly.
If someone has this AND yellow eyes, that’s definitely jaundice.
5. Loss of Appetite
People with jaundice don’t feel like eating. Food feels meh, taste is dull, even favorite things like biryani or pizza feel off
Sometimes they feel nauseous after few bites or full very fast.
6. Nausea and Vomiting
Some people feel like throwing up, esp in the morning. Or get stomach cramps, bloating and that “sour” feeling in chest.
Can be confused with acidity at first, but when combined with yellowing or weakness – jaundice is more likely.
7. Itchy Skin
This one is kinda weird but real. People with jaundice often complain of itchiness all over body, especially at night.
It’s coz the bile salts that should go into digestive tract are leaking into bloodstream and irritating skin.
8. Fever (Sometimes)
Not everyone gets fever, but in cases where jaundice is due to infection or hepatitis, fever can come with chills and body pain.
If you have fever + yellowing eyes + fatigue – go see a doc, don’t wait.
Types of Jaundice (Quick Note)
There’s 3 types actually:
-
Pre-hepatic jaundice – Before the liver (due to rapid breakdown of RBCs)
-
Hepatic jaundice – Problem inside the liver (hepatitis, cirrhosis etc)
-
Post-hepatic jaundice – After liver (gallbladder stone, bile duct block etc)
But symptoms mostly look similar, only doctors and tests can confirm the type.
Symptoms in Newborns (Baby Jaundice)
Babies also get jaundice in first week after birth – called neonatal jaundice. It’s common and mostly harmless.
-
Baby’s skin and eyes turn yellow
-
Sleepy or lazy feeding
-
Weak crying
Doctors check bilirubin level and put baby under blue light (phototherapy) if needed. Don’t panic if your baby has it – happens to many newborns.
When to See Doctor?
You should definitely go to a doctor if:
-
Eyes and skin are turning yellow
-
Urine is dark for more than 2 days
-
You feel super tired, can’t eat
-
Vomiting or stomach pain is bad
-
Fever along with above symptoms
They’ll usually do a blood test (LFT – liver function test) and maybe ultrasound or scan if needed.
Home Care (but only after doctor check)
Once doctor confirms and gives meds or rest advice, then you can follow these home tips:
Drink lots of water – flush out toxins
Eat light, clean food – khichdi, boiled veggies
Avoid spicy, oily, junk food
No alcohol at all
Take rest – body needs time to heal
Some people say sugarcane juice is good – but only if doctor says okay. Don’t believe every WhatsApp forward
What Causes Jaundice?
Just for info, here are some common causes:
-
Hepatitis A, B, C – viral infection of liver
-
Alcoholic liver disease
-
Gallstones – blocks bile duct
-
Liver cirrhosis – scarring of liver
-
Malaria or dengue (sometimes)
-
Autoimmune diseases
-
Fatty liver (common in young people now)
Even medications, or herbal stuff sometimes damage liver. So always take medicine only as prescribed.
Final Thoughts – Don’t Ignore the Yellow
Jaundice is one of those illnesses that looks harmless at first. Like “Oh, just yellow eyes and feeling tired.” But if not treated on time, it can lead to serious liver problems.
So if you or someone you know has these symptoms, don’t wait. Go to a doctor, do a liver function test, and get rest + treatment.
Also, please don’t try “nimbu pani and rest at home” for 10 days without even knowing what kind of jaundice it is. Proper diagnosis is very important.
Take care of your liver, it’s one of the most hardworking organs we have. And it doesn’t complain until it’s really in trouble.
