Migraine Symptoms – It’s Not Just a Headache, Trust Me

Okay so first things first – migraine is not just a “bad headache.” Like seriously, if someone ever tells you “it’s just a headache, take a Saridon,” you are legally allowed to scream (jk, but still ). Migraines are a whole experience and if you’ve had one, you know what I mean.

People who never had migraine don’t get it. They think it’s just some pain in the head but those who have it know — it can mess up your whole day, sometimes even 2-3 days. It affects your head, your mood, your stomach, your eyes, and sometimes even your life plan if it gets too regular

So let’s talk about the symptoms of migraine — the real ones, not just what a textbook says, but how people actually feel it.

What is a Migraine?

Migraine is a kind of neurological condition. Basically something in your brain’s system goes off and causes intense headache plus a bunch of other symptoms. It’s not fully understood why it happens (so annoying, right?) but it’s connected to blood vessels, nerves, chemicals, and possibly even genetics.

There are different types of migraines too — with aura, without aura, chronic migraine, hemiplegic migraine (super rare), etc. But whatever type you have, one thing’s for sure: it’s horrible.

Common Migraine Symptoms – The Stuff Most People Feel

So migraines usually come in stages, though not everyone goes through all of them. But here’s the basic list of what people experience:

1. Headache (duh, but let’s break it down)

Not all headaches are migraines but almost all migraines have headache in them. But it’s not your normal “oh I didn’t sleep well” kind of pain. It’s intense. And usually:

  • On one side of the head (sometimes both)

  • Throbbing or pulsing pain

  • Gets worse with movement, light, sound, smells

  • Can last 4 to 72 hours (yes, 3 days!!)

Some people say it feels like your head is going to explode. Others say it feels like someone drilling into your skull

2. Nausea or Vomiting

This is super common. Around 8 out of 10 people feel sick to their stomach during migraine. You might not eat anything and still feel like puking.

Some people actually do vomit. And weirdly, some say they feel better after throwing up (I don’t recommend it, just saying).

3. Sensitivity to Light, Sound, Smell

During a migraine attack, everything is too much:

  • Light feels like lasers

  • Noise feels like a hammer

  • Perfumes or kitchen smells? Instant regret

That’s why people just wanna lie down in a dark, quiet room and not talk to anyone.

4. Aura (in some people)

About 1/3rd of migraine sufferers get aura before the headache starts. Aura is like a warning sign that a migraine is coming. It can look like:

  • Zigzag lines in vision

  • Blind spots (like part of your vision is missing)

  • Flashing lights

  • Tingling in hands or face

  • Difficulty speaking

Aura usually lasts 10 to 30 minutes before the headache kicks in. But not everyone gets this.

5. Neck Pain or Stiffness

Some people get pain in their neck or shoulders before or during the migraine. It feels tight or sore. Sometimes people think they “slept wrong” but nope, it’s just another lovely part of the migraine.

6. Mood Changes (like mood swings for no reason)

Before a migraine starts, you might feel:

  • Cranky

  • Depressed

  • Super happy for no reason (called euphoria)

  • Restless or anxious

It’s weird, but your mood actually changes before the pain even starts. Some people feel this in the prodrome phase (that’s the “pre-migraine” stage).

7. Food Cravings or Loss of Appetite

Some people crave chocolate, salty stuff, or carbs right before a migraine. Others don’t feel like eating at all. If you’re suddenly like “I need fries and ice cream NOW” – it might not be just cravings, it might be a migraine sign.

8. Brain Fog / Confusion

You feel like your brain just isn’t working. You forget words, can’t concentrate, maybe even say weird sentences like “where’s my phonebook” when you meant “laptop.” ‍

This can happen during or after the migraine – people call it the migraine hangover or postdrome phase.

Less Common But Still Real Symptoms

  • Diarrhea or stomach upset

  • Dizziness or vertigo

  • Tingling/numbness in face or limbs

  • Seeing weird stuff (hallucinations in rare cases)

  • Chills or sweating

Migraine Triggers – What Causes It?

Migraines are different for everyone, but some common triggers include:

  • Stress (of course)

  • Lack of sleep or too much sleep

  • Hunger / skipping meals

  • Hormonal changes (especially in women around period time)

  • Weather change

  • Strong smells

  • Bright lights or screen time

  • Caffeine – too much or withdrawal

  • Alcohol (especially red wine for many)

  • Certain foods (like aged cheese, chocolate, MSG, etc)

So if you think you’re getting migraines, start keeping a trigger diary. It really helps.

How Long Does a Migraine Last?

Migraine attacks can last:

  • Few hours (lucky you)

  • Up to 3 days

  • And you may feel tired or weird for a day after it ends

So even if the pain is gone, the recovery takes time. It’s like a mini illness every time.

When to See a Doctor?

Go see a doc if:

  • Headaches are happening frequently (like more than 4 times a month)

  • Pain is so bad you can’t function

  • Over-the-counter meds don’t help

  • You get aura or numbness

  • You’re not sure if it’s migraine or something else (like sinus, tension headaches, etc)

They might do tests to rule out other things and give you proper meds like triptans or preventives.

Final Thoughts (From a Fellow Headache Sufferer )

If you’re reading this while having a migraine — I’m so sorry, I’ve been there. It’s hard to explain to people who don’t get them how bad they can be. It’s not “just a headache,” it’s like your brain is in a war zone and you didn’t sign up.

Knowing the symptoms, catching it early, avoiding triggers, and getting proper meds can make a HUGE difference.

And if you’re someone who knows a friend or partner with migraines — be kind. They’re not being dramatic. They’re just trying to survive something that can feel completely disabling.

Take care of your brain. Stay hydrated. Sleep enough. And please, wear sunglasses when it’s too bright outside.
